This past April, during the NFL Draft 2016 in Chicago, the NFL, USA Football, GENYOUth and Fuel Up to Play 60 announced the expansion of the Fuel Up to Play 60 NFL FLAG Essentials program.
This commitment to increase physical activity of youth, with the distribution of NFL FLAG Essentials Kits to 4,000 schools nationwide will reach 1.5 million new students, doubled the number of resources provided in the first two years of the program. The expansion was made possible by a $1.5 million commitment from the NFL Foundation.
With this commitment, the partners will have supplied approximately 8,500 schools nationwide, including all 32 NFL club markets, with much-needed resources for their physical education programs since 2014, resulting in three million students getting active through NFL FLAG.
We are officially on tour this Summer and Fall bringing Fuel Up to Play 60 NFL FLAG Essentials training to Physical Education Teachers in 18 cities across the country: Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Oakland, Washington D.C., San Diego, Newark, Green Bay, Kansas City, Nashville, Houston, Denver, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Charlotte, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Detroit.
We kicked off the 2016 trainings on Tuesday, July 26th in Indianapolis, training 53 Physical Educators from Indianapolis Public Schools, with help from our friends at the Indianapolis Colts, American Dairy Association of Indiana, and SHAPE America.
Our second training took place on Thursday, August 4th in Tampa, training over 400 Physical Educators from Hillsborough School District, with help from our friends the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dairy Council of Florida, and SHAPE America. The Buccaneers graciously offered over 200 pairs of pre-season tickets to training participants.
On Wednesday, August 10th we were able to have a training on site at the New Orleans Saints Training facility, training over 50 Physical Educators from Jefferson Parish School District. Clearly, our friends the New Orleans Saints played a big part at this training, along with help from our friends at SUDIA, and SHAPE America.
The fourth training of 2016 took place on Friday, August 12th at the home of the Oakland Raiders, who not only offered us their training field to play on, but also graciously gave away Raiders branded bags to the 40+ Physical Educators from Oakland Unified School District. The Raiders kept staff on site the entire time to help with set up and demonstrations and really got involved from start to finish.
Additional trainings for 2016 include:
• San Diego Chargers at their training facility
• Baltimore Ravens as a Baltimore city school
• Green Bay Packers at a local school
• Kansas City Chiefs at a local school
• Washington Redskins at a DC city school
• Houston Texans at a Houston ISD school
• Denver Broncos at their training facility
• Tennessee Titans at a local school
• New York Giants at a Newark public school
• Cleveland Browns at a PE professional development center
• Cincinnati Bengals
• Philadelphia Eagles
• Carolina Panthers
• Detroit Lions
In addition to the National and District offer, our great friends at Nike have come through with additional support. These dollars will be leveraged to support trainings in 6 of the 18 markets (DC, NY, Houston, Philly, Baltimore and Detroit); support the expansion of FLAG leagues for girls in Miami Dade County Public Schools, and fund a “train-the-trainer” effort to expand qualified trainers available for 2016 trainings. These trainers will then travel to the Redskins FLAG training scheduled for later that afternoon for their first “hand-on” training experience. Having additional trainers will support our ability to host more quality trainings, and we are thrilled that Nike agrees that it is an important step in growing the program.
